My Unconventional Journey to Becoming a Full-Time Elopement Photographer
Hey, Thrivers! I'm Devin, and I want to share with you the unique and sometimes hilarious journey that led me to my dream career as a full-time elopement photographer. My story might be a bit different from the norm, so get ready for a trip down memory lane, starting from my sixth-grade dreams of becoming a marine biologist.
Devin the boy-crazy marine biologist
Back in my younger years, I was obsessed with manatees and had grand aspirations of becoming a marine biologist. Fast forward to high school, where I had plans to attend Hawaii Pacific University, only to have those dreams dashed by a boyfriend who whisked me away to the West Coast instead.
The college years
My college years took an unexpected turn when I found myself at Central Washington University, far from the ocean. I pivoted from marine biology to fashion merchandising and public relations, a surprising double major combination that ended up working surprisingly well.
Working in corporate America
(and falling in loveeee)
After college, I ventured into the world of fashion by working for Free People and later Helly Hansen, where I crossed paths with my future husband, Matt. Our love story didn't start off smoothly, but sometimes the most memorable journeys have bumpy beginnings.
Stay at home mom era
Life took an unexpected turn when I became pregnant during my Helly Hansen days. I decided to take a break from the corporate world and focus on being a stay-at-home mom to my daughter. However, my restlessness led me to freelance work for various small businesses.
The Quest for Fulfillment and a Shift Towards Photography
During my stay-at-home mom phase, I realized I needed something more fulfilling. Photography had always intrigued me, especially after seeing friends and family have beautiful photos taken. However, the journey to becoming a photographer was far from straightforward.
A Leap of Faith into Photography
ALTERNATE TITLE: Meeting Spencer the creepy Craiglist guy and going to a workshop LOLLLL
I embarked on my photography journey by purchasing a camera from a stranger on Craigslist, setting the stage for a new chapter in my life. Attending a photography workshop with a friend further fueled my passion and confidence in my newfound career path.
Building Backcountry Bohemians and the Power of Community
With newfound determination, I registered my business, Backcountry Bohemians, and dove headfirst into photography. My first year involved shooting many sessions for free and investing in self-education, thanks to YouTube University. I found that being part of a supportive photography community made all the difference.
Balancing Motherhood and Thriving in My Photography Business
Balancing motherhood and a burgeoning photography business wasn't easy, but with my husband's unwavering support, we made it work. He became the primary caregiver for a year, allowing me to focus entirely on my business and personal growth.
Finding My Why and Thriving as a Photographer
Defining my "why" in the world of photography was a challenge, but I discovered that my passion for creativity, the outdoors, and traveling with my family were reason enough. Thriving in my business means finding balance, taking breaks when needed, and achieving my financial goals.
Embracing New Opportunities
As my photography business continued to grow, I explored new avenues, such as offering Super-8 and creating custom backdrops for weddings. It's about staying adaptable and open to opportunities in this ever-evolving industry.
